If you’re looking for an Independent Analytics alternative, GreenOrb Statistics is another self-hosted analytics plugin for WordPress. It includes live visitors, UTM campaign tracking, click tracking, visitor journeys and email reports in its free version, and its Pro version adds an assistant that answers questions about your stats in plain English. Independent Analytics supports more shop plugins, and includes saved reports and a public view counter free.

Both plugins run inside WordPress and keep your visitor data in your own database, with nothing sent to an outside analytics service. Both have a free version on WordPress.org and a paid Pro version. They differ most in what you get without paying and in how they handle bot traffic.

Independent Analytics may suit you better if

• you want to save your own report views and filter any table by any column
• you want a public view counter on your posts
• you manage more than 50 sites on one licence

GreenOrb Statistics may suit you better if

• you’d like to ask questions about your traffic in plain English
• you run a WooCommerce shop and want to see where buyers drop out of checkout

What you get free

Independent Analytics keeps several everyday reports for Pro customers. GreenOrb Statistics includes them in the free version.

GreenOrb’s campaign report reads the UTM tags on links you create yourself. Independent Analytics Pro also includes a tool for building those links.

Bot traffic

Independent Analytics ignores more than 500 bots that identify themselves, such as search engines, SEO crawlers and uptime monitors. Its knowledge base says it makes no attempt to detect bots that disguise themselves as human visitors, and suggests Cloudflare or Wordfence for those.

GreenOrb Statistics filters bots that identify themselves too, using the Matomo bot signature list. It also checks for headless and automated browsers, and caps how many hits a single IP address can record. A daily scan then looks for visitors that act like bots but got past those checks, such as repeated visits to one page with no scrolling, clicks or plays. Those visitors are flagged for you to review rather than deleted, and a filtered-traffic receipt shows how much was taken out and why.

Ask AI (a Pro feature)

GreenOrb Statistics Pro includes an assistant that answers questions about your analytics in plain English. You type a question, pick a period, and it looks up the reports it needs from your own data to answer. Independent Analytics’ features page lists no equivalent. It has an AI assistant on its website for support questions, but not inside the plugin.

Some of the questions it’s built for:

• What changed most this month compared with last month, and why?
• Which traffic sources send the most engaged visitors?
• How much bot traffic did you filter this week, and what kind?
• Where is the biggest drop-off in my checkout funnel?
• If I could fix three things to grow revenue, what would they be?

It also writes a weekly summary of what went up, what went down and what needs attention, which can be emailed to you.

How it handles your data

• It uses your own API key for Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini, so the cost goes on your own account with that provider.
• It can only read your analytics. It can’t change anything on your site.
• By default it only sees totals, such as “42 visitors from Germany”, not individual visitors. Per-visitor answers are a separate setting, off by default.
• Your API key is encrypted in the database and never sent to the browser. You can also keep it out of the database entirely by putting it in wp-config.php.
• It’s off until you turn it on, and it’s the only part of GreenOrb that sends your statistics to an outside service.

Cookies and privacy

Independent Analytics sets no cookies. It recognises returning visitors from a hash of their IP address and browser details, and can change the salt used for that hash every day.

GreenOrb Statistics sets one first-party cookie by default to recognise returning visitors across months. It waits for statistics consent when your cookie banner is connected through the free WP Consent API plugin. You can switch the cookie off and run GreenOrb with zero cookies, in which case it uses a hash that changes every month instead.
